The Yunlong Lake Laboratory of Deep Underground Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the "Yunlong Lake Laboratory") is situated in Xuzhou City, a renowned national historical and cultural city, a national comprehensive transport hub, and the center of the Huaihai Economic Zone, known as the "thoroughfare of five provinces."

Officially inaugurated on October 22, 2021, the Yunlong Lake Laboratory is a major technological innovation platform established by Xuzhou City. It leverages the advantageous innovative resources of large enterprises in the city, particularly those affiliated with China University of Mining and Technology, to seize strategic opportunities in the field of deep underground science and engineering at the national level. The laboratory aims to build a regional technological innovation center and has attracted a high-level research team that includes full-time academicians and national-level talents. Relying on the only national key laboratory in the field of deep underground engineering, the Yunlong Lake Laboratory is committed to becoming a national laboratory. In September 2023, it was approved to start the construction of a Jiangsu Provincial Laboratory, making it the only one of its kind in northern and central Jiangsu. In 2024, the acceleration of the construction of the Yunlong Lake Laboratory was included in the Jiangsu Provincial Government Work Report.It officially became the fourth provincial laboratory in December 2024, and is currently the only provincial laboratory in the central and northern regions of Jiangsu.

The Yunlong Lake Laboratory integrates domestic and international innovative resources in deep underground science and engineering, focusing on one main research direction: "Deep Underground Resource and Space Development." The laboratory conducts research in deep underground energy and resource development, intelligent construction of deep underground space, deep underground space material storage, and deep underground space safety protection. It explores the scientific laws of deep underground engineering geology, energy and material transport in deep underground space, and the evolution and disaster of deep underground environmental changes, forming original theories. Additionally, the laboratory develops advanced technologies and equipment for precise detection of deep underground space, intelligent construction techniques and high-end equipment for deep underground engineering, and forward-looking technologies for deep underground energy and resource development.
